While clearing snow off the car  just as dawn was breaking this morning there was a rapid tick tick tick tick noise coming from a nearby tree. It was a Robin seemingly asking for breakfast. Small birds are particularly affected by cold weather. The Robin sat there as the snow fell adding to a carpet that covered most of the normally available sources of food. I put out a few dried mealworms and sure enough a couple of minutes later the Robin was having breakfast.

It is easy to help keep birds alive in your garden and particularly important in winter if you want to see them in the spring. Having put out the mealworms I did a bit more than the usual topping up the seed feeders. I made some fatball mixture by grinding up some peanuts and sunflower hearts and mixing them with currants. Melted lard poured over the top and put into containers to be either put on the ground or hung from the trees supplies vital energy for a range of birds.

Some left over rice, multi-grain bread, old ham, more mealworms and extra currants along with some of the fatball mixture were then added to the bird table and put around the garden. Total time – about 10 minutes. Total cost – maybe a couple of quid. The result? So far visitors to the garden include a small flock of Greenfinches, Chaffinches, Coal, Blue and Great Tits, Starlings, Blackbirds, House Sparrows, Dunnocks, Rooks, Jackdaws,  Magpies, Song Thrushes, a pair of Collared Doves and the Robin of course. Although not seen yet a Pheasant will probably show up later along with a flock of Long Tailed Tits and a Wren or two. Maybe some Gold Finches and who knows what else.

It’s easy, simple and about the cost of a pint of beer to help keep this part of our wildlife alive which is well worth it by any standards.

There is no one more qualified than Reg Keys — whose son Tom was killed in Iraq — to comment on Tony Blair’s admission to the BBC that, if he hadn’t used the non-existent weapons of mass destruction to justify a war crime, he would have found another “argument” — that is, another lie. This is a must-see interview.

Reg Keys famously stood against Tony Blair in the 2005 general election, in his campaign to get justice for his son Tom, who was killed in Iraq. Reg has campaigned tirelessly to get Tony Blair held to account for the lies he told to take Britain into an illegal war.

In this BBC interview he explains why he believe Tony Blair is a war criminal, responsible for the death of his son, , 178 other British soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis.

This is a must watch video in which the arguments against Tory Blair are so eloquently put by Reg Keys that it has to be seen to be believed. Blair should be indicted as a war criminal now. As should his master George Bush.

Britons ‘won’t change to fight global warming’ – Channel 4 News

This is a depressing article on how Britons won’t change their lifestyles to fight global warming.

However it’s not really that surprising is it? Some of us live in circles where people do change and do all they can. The complete indifference shown by the vast majority hightlights how big a job there is to convince the public that they have to do something. It may seem bizarre to those of us who are convinced that without major changes the world is f*ck*d but for most this just isn’t the case.

Not all is lost – many campaigns that seemed futile in the past have succeeded, most notably the anti-slavery campaign and votes for all.

Time is tight and we need to move quickly. We need to find the triggers that will appeal to more and more people. Looking post-Copenhagen is difficult right now and it will be worth returning to this again when it is clearer what the outcome from there is.

For now we need as many approaches as possible and one that would seem achievable would be to get all 3 major parties, plus the Greens and any others who agree to take this issue out of politics. Get them all signed up as a mass block of political opinion that says “no matter what the next government is going to take Climate Change seriously”. Assuming the wretched BNP don’t win the election whatever the outcome then we can move the agenda forward.

Other than that challenging people whenever we can is important but tactics need to be carefully thought through. It is clear that scare tactics don’t work. Constantly badgering people that they must do this and that doesn’t work. We need to make sure that we keep the discussion rational. Absurd stories about half of city x or y or z being underwater in a few years time even if true simply won’t be believed.

We need a steady steam of facts and actual stories of how people are being affected now. We need to keep these coming and find imaginative ways of drawing people’s attention to them.

Kevin Grandia: The 30,000 Global Warming Petition Is Easily-Debunked Propaganda

To say that the oft-touted “30,000 Global Warming Petition” project stinks would be the understatement of the year.

I thought it would be timely to once again break down this flawed piece of global warming denier propaganda after it was mentioned last night in Daily Show host Jon Stewart’s interview with US Energy Secretary of Energy, Dr. Stephen Chu.

.1% of Signers Have a Background in Climatology

The Petition Project website offers a breakdown of the areas of expertise of those who have signed the petition.

In the realm of climate science it breaks it breaks down as such:

Atmospheric Science (113)

Climatology (39)

Meteorology (341)

Astronomy (59)

Astrophysics (26)

So only .1% of the individuals on the list of 30,000 signatures have a scientific background in Climatology. To be fair, we can add in those who claim to have a background in Atmospheric Science, which brings the total percentage of signatories with a background in climate change science to a whopping .5%.

The page does not break out the names of those who do claim to be experts in Climatology and Atmospheric Science, which makes even that .5% questionable [see my section on "unverifiable mess" below].

This makes an already questionable list seem completely insignificant given the nature of scientific endeavor.

When I think I’m having chest pains I don’t go to the dermatologist, I go to a cardiologist because it would be absurd to go to skin doctor for a heart problem. It would be equally absurd to look to a scientist with a background in medicine (of which there are 3,046 on the petition) for an expert opinion on the science of climate change. With science broken down into very narrow specialties a scientific expert in one specialty does not make that person an automatic authority in all things science.

In this way the logic of the 30,000 petition is completely flawed, which isn’t surprising given its questionable beginnings.

The Petition’s Sordid Beginnings

The petition first emerged in April 1998 and was organized by Art Robinson of the self-proclaimed “Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine” (OISM) [their headquarters are the Photo Inset].

Along with the Exxon-backed George C. Marshall Institute, Robinson’s group co-published the infamous “Oregon Petition” claiming to have collected 17,000 signatories to a document arguing against the realities of global warming.

The petition and the documents included were all made to look like official papers from the prestigious National Academy of Science. They weren’t, and this attempt to mislead has been well-documented.

Along with the petition there was a cover letter from Dr. Fred Seitz (who has since died), a notorious climate change denier (and big tobacco scientist) who over 30 years ago was the president of the National Academy of Science.

Also attached to the petition was an apparent “research paper” titled Environmental Effects of Increased Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide. The paper was made to mimic what a research paper would look like in the National Academy’s prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy journal. The authors of the paper were Robinson, Sallie Baliunas, Willie Soon (both oil-backed scientists) and Robinson’s son Zachary. With the signature of a former NAS president and a research paper that appeared to be published in one of the most prestigious science journals in the world, many scientists were duped into signing a petition based on a false impression.

The petition was so misleading that the National Academy issued a news release stating: “The petition project was a deliberate attempt to mislead scientists and to rally them in an attempt to undermine support for the Kyoto Protocol. The petition was not based on a review of the science of global climate change, nor were its signers experts in the field of climate science.”

An Unverifiable Mess

Time and time again, I have had emails from researchers who have taken random samples of names from the list and Google searched them for more information. I urge others to do the same. What you’ll quickly find is either no information, very little information or information substantiating the fact that the vast majority of signers are completely unqualified in the area of climate change science.

For example,

“Munawwar M. Akhtar” – no info other than the fact that he is a signatory on the petition.

“Fred A. Allehoff” – no info other than the fact that he is a signatory on the petition.

“Ernest J. Andberg” – no info other than the fact that he is a signatory on the petition.

“Joseph J. Arx” – no info other than the fact that he is a signatory on the petition.

“Adolph L. Amundson” – a paper by Amundson on the “London Tunnel Water Treatment System Acid Mine Drainage.” [PDF]

“Henry W. Apfelbach” – an Orthopedic Surgeon

“Joe R. Arechavaleta” – runs an Architect and Engineering company.

And this is only names I picked in the “A’s.” I could go on, but you get my point. The list is very difficult to verify as a third-party, but this hasn’t stopped the Petition from bouncing around the internet and showing up in mainstream media.

Given all this it seems to me that anyone touting this as proof that “global warming is a hoax” completely misunderstands the process of scientific endeavor or has completely exhausted any real argument that rightfully brings into to doubt the reality of climate change.

Or, then again, they could just be in it for the money.

I am not surprised to find this in the US having listened to Radio 5Live last night when the Richard Bacon show had convincing sounding Climate Sceptic Christopher Monkton and Phil Thornhill From the Campaign Against Climate Change on the show. Monkton seemed to think that there were 30,000 Climae Change scientists involved in the petition. It seems his sources are as bad as his science.

The funniest part was when he tried to convince people that he had some kind of science/maths background himself. Which was not remotely convincing unless you really wanted to be convinced. However therein lies the problem. Most people are very ready to be convinced so the sceptics (liars would be a more accurate term) have it easy when it comes to debates.

People don’t like to be told either that what they have done for years is wrong or that they are going to have to change their ways. If you can then also convince them that doing something about Climate Change means more taxes as well they will believe any old shite that says they don’t need to worry and that it’s all a con.

What was even more disturbing though was that in the news report just after the show the BBC (yes the BBC that is supposed to educate) contained an unopposed quote from Monkton as if it were the truth. Unbelievable.
